A maritime mishap that would have led to the death of top military officers including the Commander of Joint Task Force, Operation Delta Safe (ODS), Rear Admiral Apochi Suleiman was averted on Tuesday when the Ikang Jetty collapsed tossing all the military officers and their men into the River.
Sources said there was total confusion as the military officers and other soldiers struggled to stay afloat so as not to drown.
Ikang Jetty is located at Akpabuyo Local Government of Cross Rivers State and is a major link from which the military especially the Navy deploy its men to the Northern part of Cross Rivers state.
The military has been having a running battle with militant and sea-pirates that have been terrorising the water ways in Calabar North.
According to Armada investigations, Suleiman in company of component commanders of the ODS, officers of Nigerian Navy Ship(NNS) Victory and Sector Four were gathered at the Jetty as part of Operation Safety Check in the deployment of troops when the Jetty collapsed and all the people on it fell into the River.
The spokesman of the ODS, Major Ibrahim Abdullahi who confirmed the incident in a statement said it was the survival capability of the military officers and their men that saved the day and ensured the Nigeria military was not thrown into mourning.
Abduallhi said all the arms and equipment that fell into the River were recovered, adding that those that had slight injuries have been treated.
He disclosed that the military officers have returned to Calabar, Cross Rivers State capital to re-strategise as the planned inspection and patrol would still go ahead.
